Faircrest Heights, Los Angeles

Faircrest Heights is a primarily residential district in the Pico-Fairfax area of Los Angeles, California. 'Faircrest' refers to its location between Fairfax Avenue to the east and the Crestview neighborhood to the west.

Geography

The boundaries of Faircrest Heights are Pico Boulevard on the north, Fairfax Avenue on the east, Venice Boulevard on the south, and La Cienega Boulevard on the west. Faircrest Heights is part of the P.I.C.O. Neighborhood Council, bounded by La Brea, Olympic/San Vicente, Venice and La Cienega. The Crestview and Pico-Robertson neighborhoods lie to the west, Carthay Square and South Carthay neighborhoods to the north, Picfair Village to the east, and Culver City to the south. Primary thoroughfares through the area include Pico Boulevard, Airdrome, Pickford, 18th Street, Venice Boulevard, Fairfax Avenue, Crescent Heights Boulevard, and La Cienega Boulevard. Faircrest Heights has views of Downtown Los Angeles to the east, the Baldwin Hills to the south, and Century City to the west.

Faircrest Heights is often described as part of Mid-City Los Angeles[1] and/or the Mid-Wilshire District.

Neighborhood Composition and Demographics

Faircrest Heights is a solidly middle class community located in the 90035 ZIP code. Per the U.S. Census of 2000, racial representation was mixed with approximately 52% African-American, 26% non-Latino white, 20% Latino of any race, and 12% other. The 2000 median household income was $50,874. The housing stock was primarily built in the late 1930s and early 1940s, and consists of primarily Spanish Colonial Revival, English Revival, and Minimal Traditional style single family residences, with some small apartment buildings (mostly in the areas north of Pickford Street).

Located within the Faircrest Heights area, is the LACES Recreation Center. LACES has tennis courts, basketball courts (indoors and outdoors), exercise room. The LACES Recreation Center is located at 5931 West 18th Place Los Angeles, CA 90035, behind the school. Call (323) 933-8343 for details. LACES Aquatic Center (inside the Recreation Center) has swimming lessons for all ages, as well as open swimming times. There is heated, indoor pool, a convenient dressing area, showers and lockers. History

Neighbors United is the Faircrest Heights neighborhood organization, founded in 1981. Their mission is to preserve and strengthen the quality of the Faircrest Heights neighborhood by promoting safety, organizing community events, encouraging beautification, and by promoting and facilitating citizen communication, participation, and involvement in local governance. Neighbors United meets on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7pm at the Claude Pepper Senior Center, 1762 S. La Cienega Blvd.

In December 2004, Los Angeles Magazine named Faircrest Heights one of the "10 Best Neighborhoods You've Never Heard Of".[4]
